My Simple 5-Step Morning Skincare Routine for Oily, Dehydrated Skin
How I Cleared My Acne Marks, Redness & Dehydrated Skin

A few years ago, my skin looked completely different.
I struggled with acne marks, PIE (post-inflammatory erythema), PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), redness, uneven skin tone, and constant breakouts. To make things worse, my skin is naturally oily but also dehydrated — a combination that made it difficult to find products that actually worked.
It took plenty of trial and error, but over time I realized something important: I didn't need a complicated 10-step routine. I just needed the right products, a healthy skin barrier, and consistency.
This is the morning skincare routine that has made the biggest difference for my skin.
Step 1: Cleanse (Or Don't)
One thing I've learned is that skincare isn't one-size-fits-all. Some people prefer cleansing immediately after waking up, while others don't need to.
Personally, I don't wash my face with cleanser first thing in the morning. Instead, I simply rinse my face with water, apply sunscreen, and head to the gym. After my workout, that's when I cleanse my face properly.
If your skin feels clean when you wake up, there's nothing wrong with skipping cleanser. Over-cleansing can sometimes strip your skin of its natural oils and weaken your skin barrier, especially if you already have dehydrated skin.
Step 2: Toner
TIRTIR Milk Skin Toner Light

A toner helps replenish hydration after cleansing while preparing your skin to absorb the products that follow.
For oily skin, I recommend choosing a toner that is lightweight, hydrating, soothing, fragrance-free if you're sensitive, and non-sticky.
The TIRTIR Milk Skin Toner Light has been my favourite because it gives my skin plenty of hydration without feeling heavy or greasy. My skin feels calmer, softer, and much more balanced after using it, making it an excellent first step before layering the rest of my routine.
Step 3: Hydrating Serum
IUNIK Beta-Glucan Power Moisture Serum

This is a step that I think many people overlook. Just because your face is oily doesn't mean it's hydrated. In fact, many of us have oily skin on the surface but dehydrated skin underneath. When your skin lacks water, it often produces even more oil to compensate.
After trying several different serums, the IUNIK Beta-Glucan Serum has become my favourite because it's incredibly lightweight and layers beautifully under makeup.
The hero ingredient is beta-glucan, which is known for providing long-lasting hydration, helping strengthen the skin barrier, calming irritation and redness, and supporting skin repair.
Many people compare beta-glucan to hyaluronic acid, but some studies suggest beta-glucan can retain moisture even more effectively while also offering additional soothing benefits. For sensitive, acne-prone skin, I've personally found it to be a better fit.
Step 4: Azelaic Acid
ANUA Azelaic Acid 10 Serum

If I had to pick the secret ingredient in my routine, this would probably be it. Azelaic acid has helped reduce redness, calm active breakouts, and improve the overall appearance of my skin without causing irritation.
If you're new to azelaic acid, I think the ANUA version is a great place to start. It's gentle, beginner-friendly, and focuses more on calming inflammation than aggressively treating your skin.
While it isn't the fastest product for fading acne scars or pigmentation, I'm perfectly okay with that. I'd much rather use a gentler formula consistently than use something stronger that risks damaging my skin barrier. Healthy skin heals better in the long run.
Step 5: Moisturizer
PURITO Oat-in Calming Gel Cream

For oily skin, I personally avoid heavy creams during the daytime. Instead, I prefer lightweight gel moisturizers that absorb quickly without leaving a greasy finish.
The PURITO Oat-in Calming Gel Cream has been one of my favourites because it feels incredibly lightweight, soothes irritated skin, absorbs very quickly, and layers beautifully under makeup.
One thing I personally notice is a very mild cooling sensation after applying it, which makes my skin feel extra refreshed. Your experience may differ, but it's something I've consistently enjoyed.
Step 6: Sunscreen (The Most Important Step)

If there's one product you should never skip, it's sunscreen.
For the longest time, I couldn't understand why my acne marks and hyperpigmentation weren't fading. The problem wasn't my serums. It wasn't my moisturizers. It was the fact that I kept skipping sunscreen.
UV exposure doesn't just increase your risk of premature ageing — it also makes post-acne marks, PIH, and redness last much longer. Even if you're using ingredients like azelaic acid, vitamin C, niacinamide, or retinol, you'll struggle to see their full benefits if your skin isn't protected from the sun every day.
A good sunscreen helps prevent existing pigmentation from getting darker while giving your skin the chance to heal properly.
For my oily, dehydrated, sensitive skin, the House of HUR Weightless Sun Fluid SPF50+ PA++++ has been one of the best sunscreens I've used. What I love most is that it dries down to a natural matte finish — but not the kind that leaves your skin feeling tight or stripped. It takes away excess shine while still feeling comfortable and hydrated throughout the day.
It's lightweight, layers beautifully over my skincare, doesn't pill under makeup, and has never irritated my sensitive skin.
Finding a sunscreen that you'll actually enjoy wearing every day is one of the biggest keys to maintaining healthy skin. Once you find one that suits your skin type, make it a habit to wear it every single morning — even when you're staying indoors or it's cloudy outside.
It's easily the most important step in my entire routine.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, skincare isn't about finding one magical product. It's about building a routine that works for your skin and sticking to it consistently.
Focus on keeping your skin hydrated, protecting your skin barrier, and wearing sunscreen every single day. Don't feel pressured to use dozens of active ingredients all at once. In many cases, a simple routine done consistently will outperform a complicated routine that's impossible to maintain.
This routine has helped me transform my oily, dehydrated, acne-prone skin, and while everyone's skin is different, I hope it gives you a good starting point if you're dealing with similar concerns.
Remember — healthy skin isn't built overnight. Give your skin time, be patient, and stay consistent. The results will come.
Everyone's skin is different. This routine is based on my personal experience with oily, dehydrated, combination skin. Results will vary depending on your skin type, concerns, and other factors. Always patch test new products and consult a dermatologist if you have specific skin concerns.
